Meet our Doctors
Sharon R. Schmahl DDS, MSD
Upon earning her undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa, Dr. Sharon Schmahl, an Iowa native, taught junior and senior high schoolers in the United States and Guatemala. After working in medical relief, she entered the University of Iowa Dental School and earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, followed by a general practice and hospital dentistry residency at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
During Dental School, she joined the US Army National Guard and is a 14-year veteran. After practice general dentistry for 14 years, Dr. Schmahl received her Masters of Science in Dentistry (MSD) in orthodontics from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, where she currently serves as associate clinical professor, and she opened Schmahl orthodontics in 1996.
For many years, she was a volunteer on the Akron Children’s Hospital craniofacial team that treats cleft palates and other craniofacial abnormalities. A leader in organized dentistry, Dr. Schmahl is Vice President of the Ohio Association of Orthodontists and served as President of the Cleveland Society of Orthodontists; she is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, the Great Lakes Society of Orthodontists, and the American Dental Association. Dr. Schmahl has consistently been included in the following peer-rated ratings: Top Dentists in Northeast Ohio, Top Dentists in Ohio, and America’s Best Dentists.
A longtime resident of Chagrin Falls, she has three adult children, including Dr. Katharine Powers, and enjoys travel, books and museums.
A graduate of Chagrin Falls High School, Dr. Katharine (Kat) Powers is a longtime Clevelander and very proud of this city. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from Kenyon College, Dr. Powers earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. She completed her orthodontic residency at CWRU where she earned her Masters in Science of Dentistry (MSD) and received the prestigious Neuger Award for Clinical Excellence.
After her school and training, Dr. Powers then joined Dr. Schmahl in practice at Leap Orthodontics. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontics, and the Ohio Dental Association. Dr. Powers has also lectured on her research in Cleft Palates and Facial Asymmetries at the national meetings of the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Cleft Lip and Palate Association.
When not practicing orthodontics, she officiates both high school and NCAA college basketball - she believes this offers a genuine connection to the community and, in some cases, creates a special bond with patients. An accomplished athlete in her own right, Dr. Powers enjoys sports, travel, and reading, and is active in the development of the historic Gordon Square Arts District where she lives with her family.
